Preventing Caregiver Stress and Burnout

Quite often care-seekers have already experienced the demands of being a caregiver.  Taking on all of the responsibilities of caregiving without regular breaks or assistance is a surefire recipe for caregiver burnout.   It is also important that caregivers can see some positive results as the fruit of their labor.   The Guidepost Wellness Plan was created to make this possible.

What is caregiver burnout?

• Caregiver burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by the prolonged and overwhelming stress of caregiving.
• While caring for someone can be very rewarding, it also involves many stressors.
• Caregiving is often a long-term challenge, the stress it generates can be particularly damaging..
• The stress of caregiving can leave you vulnerable to a wide range of problems, including depression, anxiety, and eventually burnout.
• When you get to the point of caregiver burnout, both you and the person you’re caring for can suffer.

Feeling powerless is the number one contributor to burnout and depression. And it’s an easy trap to fall into as a caregiver, especially if you feel stuck in a role you didn’t expect or you feel helpless to change things for the better. The Guidepost Wellness Protocol can turn that around.

It is important that you find ways to take back your power and your control over your situation.   Don’t let caregiving dominate your life.  It’s easier to accept a difficult situation when there are other areas of your life that are rewarding.   Invest in things that give you meaning and purpose whether it’s your family, church, or a favorite hobby.

Feeling appreciated can go a long way toward not only accepting a stressful situation, but enjoying life more.   Studies show that caregivers who feel appreciated experience greater physical and emotional health.   Caregiving can actually makes them happier and healthier, despite its demands.

Guidepost would like to express our appreciation to all caregivers who take on the challenge and the stress associated with the role.   We encourage you to give yourself permission to rest and to do things that you enjoy on a daily basis. You will be a better caregiver for it.

So whether you are a professional caregiver or just a situational caregiver - Guidepost understands the difficulties and stress facing all caregivers.   We can work with you to make situation healther and to schedule the leisure time you need.

Caregiver Career Opportunities

If you are an experienced professional caregiver with an interest in Homeopathic Medicine, then Guidepost Wellness would like to invite you to apply for inclusion on our Caregiver Registry.   We specialize in private duty in-home care placements.   In addition to tradition duties, Guidepost caregivers are responsible for helping clients to implement the Guidepost Wellness Plan.   You will receive special training for our homeopathic wellness plan.   We recognize that the success of our company directly depends on the compassion, integrity, and skill level of our caregivers.

Guidepost caregivers must be heartfelt about providing clients with dignified and respectful care.   Working within a home is much different from working within a nursing home or similer group environments. The care requires a greater emphasis on relationship building with the one client and also with family members.   You can achieve a sense of accomplishment, joy, and gratification by extending the clients ability to live independently in the comfort of their own home.

Caregiver responsibilities may include the following:

• Assisting clients with personal care services such as oral care, bathing, toileting, dressing, and grooming.
• Medication reminders.
• Light housekeeping including laundry, dishes and vacuuming.
• Planning, preparing and serving meals.
• Assistance with transfers, walking and physical activity.
• Assistance with transportation to appointments, activities, errands, and shopping.
• Providing companionship and cheerful, positive assistance at all times.

The specific duties performed will vary depending on the Client Care Plan.   Sharing your skills and abilities to help others makes you special.   The gifts of a servants heart are rare, hard to find, and even harder to explain.   When sharing, caring, and serving are all viewed as inspirational acts of kindness... something magical happens and lives are changed forever.

Other caregiver minimum qualifications are as follows:

• High school graduate.
• At least 1 year experience as a Caregiver (in homes or facilities).
• Ability to successfully complete a criminal background investigation to include driving record and a pre-employment drug screen.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English as needed for the job.
• Good communication skills and a willingness to document daily activities.
• Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and healthy work environment.
• Possess a valid driver's license and have the use of an insured automobile for reliable daily transportation.
• Successful completion of a state-approved Certified Nurse Aide or Home Health Aide course is required for most positions, however it is not required for certain sitter, companionship, or transport positions.

Guidepost has caregiver placements available that can usually accommodate the flexibility you may require.   We understand that most caregivers also have certain family schedules to work around.   We have full-time and part-time homecare assignments available that may be just right for you.

You can also submit your online application from the Home page.   We will be in touch and gladly answer all of your questions.
